Jacqueline started working at Bobby Dodd Institute (BDI) nine years ago, and since then, she has been a late-night phone operator. She has utilized her position as a stepping stone for her confidence and belonging.

Her path to BDI was shaped by resilience and a moment of chance. Jacqueline remembers searching for opportunities through the Tennessee Technology Center when she was introduced to BDI. To her surprise, the supervisor who interviewed her was someone she already knew from church. He offered her the role shortly after the initial interview. Looking back, she says: “I’ve been with the company for nine years and love every minute of it.”

Jacqueline’s schedule suits her well. She credits her supervisor, Jim Lindquist, for his constant support. “Jim’s been the best boss, especially when I’ve had my bouts of illness,” she said. The understanding and flexibility she has experienced at BDI have allowed her to remain financially independent and confident in her home life.

Her role is not without its problems. Night shift work behind the switchboard requires patience, adaptability, and a high level of concentration and watchfulness when things take an unexpected turn. She experienced an early access hurdle – 19 steps to reach the office. The staff gladly arranged an alternative entrance with elevator access as soon as they were made aware of this issue, making access easier and safer for her. As her skills developed and her team rallied around her, Jacqueline’s confidence steadily grew.

The support system at BDI has been just as important as the work. Colleagues cover when health issues arise, and her crew has been extremely understanding of her use of a portable oxygen concentrator to enable her to feel comfortable with managing her health at work. For Jacqueline, that accommodation has made all the difference.

Apart from answering calls, Jacqueline has introduced ideas that refined office procedures, improved her public relations, and achieved long-term financial security. More significantly, she has found an office in which she is valued for who she is and what she brings to the group. “This job kept me steady,” she stated. “It provided me with stability, purpose, and the confidence to face the world.”
