Will’s Story: Securing an Independent Future

Will Park was facing an uncertain future before his family was referred to Bobby Dodd Institute (BDI). Born with a rare genetic disorder, Will lives with multiple disabilities, including developmental delays, autism, and generalized seizures. The Park family sought assistance from the public school system, but found they needed additional resources to meet Will’s complex needs, especially as he approached adulthood.

A Major Win

BDI’s Benefits Navigation team guided Will’s family through the process of applying for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) when Will turned 18. Together, the Benefits Navigation team and the Parks developed a futures plan for Will and secured approval for a Medicaid waiver—a major win, after being on a waiting list for 10 years. “BDI stepped up and came through at a time when we needed help,” said Will’s father, Dr. Alexander Park. “Words don’t describe the positive effect BDI has on our community.”
