October is observed as National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), a celebration of the contributions of people with disabilities in the workplace. This year’s theme is America’s Recovery: Powered by Inclusion, a national call to action to ensure that now – more than ever – individuals with disabilities are afforded access and inclusive opportunities in the wake of COVID-19.
The heartbeat of the Bobby Dodd Institute (BDI) is empowerment and employment of individuals with disabilities. Every day, but particularly this month, we encourage employers to cultivate a diverse and inclusive work culture because a workforce inclusive of all abilities is one positioned to thrive.
Here are five ways you can ensure your organization is fostering a disability-inclusive workplace:
- Educate. Organization-wide education regarding inclusion and diversity should be ongoing. The U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy has resources to assist with this effort.
- Celebrate. Shine a light on individuals with disabilities in your workplace and their undeniable contribution to overall success.
- Hire. Diversify your talent by hiring persons with disabilities.
- Review Policies. Continuously review your company’s policies to combat unconscious bias.
- Community. Cultivate spaces such as employee support groups to serve as a resource and a safe place for individuals of similar experiences.
Throughout the month, we will be sharing our own job placement success stories. Be sure to follow BDI on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter for the latest updates!
